Title: unhappy car
Description: its broke :(

Scorpio - August 23, 2010 05:41 PM (GMT)
i am an absolute noob to RC. i have had a buggy thing for a few years but barely used it unfortunately. i have now decided to revive the thing and after fixing the accident damage to the front (dad+nitro car+picnic bench = broken bits of plastic) i have discovered thats not all thats wrong.
i have lost the igniter and charger, but before that happened it wouldnt run. dad thinks its the head gasket (land rover mechanic).
also i have somehow killed a rear shock... do i replace both of them and if so what do you advise.

as i say im a noob to this, and dont really know what scale it is... i will measure it later and try to work it out.
i have managed to find out that it was made by blacksmith products... that mean anything? good? bad? i recall it cost over £100 so i hope its not a pile of rubbish really.

we could also never get it to tick over nicely so once its running i will need a bit of help with that.

i have discovered after a few failed attempts, that they dont run when its cold. however what are they like when is really warm? 35 degrees sort of warm?
the reason i ask is i would like to take it to Morocco next year and have a play in the dunes and dried up lakes.

thanks.

You can buy individual parts for your shocks, that is what i would recommend anyway, unless they are completly shot.

As for it not running properly, or not running in cold weather, i would probably say this is purely down to it not being tuned up properly, and not having the needles in the right place.

Why can't you get it started though? what is the symptoms? lol..

Got any pictures you can wack up here? :-)

Hi mate welcome to the site

Good tip sprakie

Yeh mate unfortunately we cant give that much advice on the model untill we know what model is it, but if you could wake a picture up for the chassis, im sure one of us would know what it is. :)

 yeh benches and rc models dont really mix will, carbs also like killing some models, unless you got a big off-roader that eats them for dinner.

Yeh as sprakie says, on your stocks, depending on the model you have you might be able to get replacement parts for them, but if not, replacing them should be easy enough, with most models, you dont have to just buy the shocks that are made for that model, you can use others as long as they fit. you can replace just one, but its best to do the set. :)

And again as sprakie says, the engine not ticking over or running properly is most likely down to tuning, if not down correctly, the model would be unreliable. So when its time if you need help, just ask.

All nitro models will run in the cold weather mate even the when its so cold it snows, its just some models might need a little more help to get going in the cold. A few good simple tips are, before trying to start up the engine in the cold, heat up the engine head with a air dryer or (heat gun if your careful) you could always put a sock over the engine head as well for a few minutes this will help the engine head stay warm untill its warmed up enough to stay going. Once again though if its not tuned right then in the cold its going to hard/harder to start up.

HAPPY RC-ING ALL :rc_car:

i have absolutely no idea because the last attempt at starting it was about this time last year... only just dug it out to have a look a week ago and now dont have the starter bits. thats the first thing i will be getting so i can tell you the symptoms.
i dont know how to tune it and it was my dad who was trying to get it going.
i will get my camera and put a picture up ASAP.
whats the best way to clean it? theres bits of grass and crap under most of the stuff in it. i have access to compressed air at my dads workshop so i could do that, i just dont want to start doing things that i shouldnt be and damage it even more.

i shall go get the camera.
thanks.

Hey man! yeah, you really need to get some pics up here! But once you have got the starter equiptment, then just let us know all the symptoms, does it try and fire/turn over, does it jam etc, and how does it sound?

For the tuning, there are alsorts of videos on youtube on how to do it, for example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XruoYcm4W4#

Another good idea is to maybe take it down to your local model shop, they can check it over, lubricate everything up again, and will probably even tune your engine for very VERY little money!

For the cleaning, i recommend just using an air compressor if you have one, put it no higher than 100psi and just blast everywhere you can, just go careful with your electrics! Once again, there are videos all over youtuve, and some very helpfull ones for this aswell!

Thanks alot though Marc! Great tips from your self! Especially the sock technique! never heard this before but got to try it! It even made me laugh when you said it! aha!

oh jesus, i have just noticed one of the rear wheels is at a wonky angle... its not wobbling when it turns though... i will take it off and have a look to see what i have done.

Marc.. RC Addict! - August 24, 2010 06:13 PM (GMT)
No probs sprakie mate, yeh the sock tip was cool lol used to work a treat too, i think russ was the one who first told me about that, i could be wrong though ive got a memory like a gold fish. lol

Scorpio, hmm lol theres me saying i might guess what it is from seeing a picture, well i was wrong, ive not a clue what that is, but i like it.
Could be a blacksmith product, or HSP maybe..

A few other guys might know what this is though. :) hopefully they will.

Where you say one of your rear wheels is wonky, is it the rear wheel by the exhaust?

The chances are it might not be damaged it, could just be the toe-in or camber that needs adjusting.

Let us know how you get on mate, oh dont forget you might as well get a new glow plug or 2, its always best to have spares, they can die quite easy when trying to run-in or start/run an engine that is not properly tuned,

HAPPY RC-ING :rc_car:

Scorpio - August 24, 2010 07:04 PM (GMT)
yep by the exhaust. is the thing i need to adjust a plastic rod that goes to the top of the wheel? i tried to move that but it didnt do much so i didnt force it.

it would be really good if i can find out what this is because depending on what engine it has already i might be tempted to go bigger.
i have heard of people putting twin engines in these, i dont want to but, if there is space for another engine could i possibly make a larger fuel tank or have 2 on it? from what i remember of using it re-fuelling regularly gets quite annoying.

thanks!

Scorpio - August 24, 2010 08:04 PM (GMT)
BSD racing is what it is, i cant find an exact match on their site but 2 look very similar to it and it sas BSD racing on my starter thing

Scorpio - August 24, 2010 08:21 PM (GMT)
aha! i remember now! it was a BSD racing one which had a new engine and shocks and stuff put in it by blacksmith products!
:D glad i worked that out!

does that mean its an all right car or is it rubbish?

Marc.. RC Addict! - August 24, 2010 09:32 PM (GMT)
Yeh mate if yours are adjustable you do it like that, send me a picture if a close up if you can and ill have a look..

Im not sure about putting 2 engines in it mate, im not the best person to answer that, i wouldnt do it though, looks cool and would give you a bit more power but dam will you suck a lot of fuel, lol.

BSP http://www.blacksmithproducts.co.uk/categories.asp?cat=97

yeh its one of their models so, its not going to be top quality mate but ive never owned one so i cant say their going to be bad.

Scorpio - August 25, 2010 05:38 PM (GMT)
yep, i adjusted them and they are alright, was a bit hard to do but worked in the end.
how should i have the suspension for hard off road use? at the moment i have the springs wound down as far as they will go so that the ground clearance is larger, but it means harder suspension and i assume it will shake the car around a lot more.

Marc.. RC Addict! - August 25, 2010 06:08 PM (GMT)
Nicely done mate

On your shocks, it depends, if you want them to be best on a flat hard road , then have your shocks quite hard, not to hard though, this will help with cornering, but if you want to run it off-road doing jumps and on very rough ground have the shocks a bit softer, so they absorb most of the impacts..

Have a mess around with them mate, your find the best way to have them depending on the surfaces your running on.

wolfie1 - August 28, 2010 09:41 PM (GMT)
if you go onto the himoto racing website you will find ur car on there i have a himoto mxt2s monster truck and used to buy spares from black smith products for it, bsd racing models are the exact same but rebadged even the part no are just the first 2 letters have changed, it was a good model for me but i kept on breaking shock towers on it, the alloy ones are well worth it

Scorpio - September 1, 2010 09:24 PM (GMT)
yay! found it! found it!
thanks wolfie1 !

CamStreet - October 7, 2010 03:18 PM (GMT)
haha mate  dont worry if your cars not a big brander, mines HSP, does look alot like that, except mine on-road, I do like your roll cage tho  but tbh, I put my HSP onroader against my stepdads hyper 8.5 with 8port .21 engine (he says its a racing engine) and in a straight line drag, he only beat me by the length of his car, I was litterally on his wheels, and that was in the wet, and I didnt even get to second gear! only problem with non big brand names, is that parts tend to break alot more, and as for alum shocks, defo get! my bro has already broken 2 shocks on his ACME Werewolf and so far his alum ones have stood their ground
